生于美国阿拉巴马州， 曾被授予普利策小说奖及其他众多文学奖项。她与杜鲁门•卡坡蒂是幼年的邻居和一生的朋友。《杀死一只知更鸟》据说是以卡坡蒂为原型之一创作的，现已成为公认的美国文学经典。此后，她一直隐居在家乡亚拉巴马的小镇上 ，拒绝各种采访，过着平静的生活。有人问她为什么不在盛名之下接着写作，她回答：“有过这样一次，还有什么可写的？”
